1967
Read MoreIn 1967, the Department of Mathematics faculty at the University of Calgary decided to celebrate the centennial of Canada with an expedition to the mountains. This is a film made by my Dad, Kes Salkauskas. It's prefaced with a sequence of Eckhardt Grassman climbing up the Big Rock near Okotoks - even hammering in a piton - times have changed! The actual trip was into the Waiparous Creek area of the Alberta Rockies. The entourage of families made their way on foot and with the occasional vehicle, their gear was brought in by out-fitters on horseback. There are some gaps as the cinematographer didn't actually ascend the mountains. The first ascent was cut short by one of the team members feeling ill, and the second one didn't have a camera along - although I think there is a still from the summit.
